You will love 'The Right Stuff', our version of the 'The Amazing Race' . This exciting fun filled team building scavenger hunt can can be run in almost any location. The basic idea is for teams to decipher word puzzles to figure out the exact location and task to be performed. They then go to that location and return with the item required to receive the next puzzle.

We offer several Bay Area location destinations including downtown Palo Alto, Los Gatos, Santana Row, Pier 39 San Francisco, The Sony Metreon San Francisco and Sausalito as well as downtown Palm Springs. However, 'The Right Stuff' game can be customized for your group and adapted to any location in the country... even on-site at your facility.

A full game consists of 6 -10 puzzles depending on the size of the group and how long you want the game to run. We've designed the game so that as many people as possible can participate. Each team needs someone to take charge of the manual (each team only gets one), a map person, a pad & pencil person, someone to handle the additional clues, and some assorted smart people to help figure the thing out.

The real fun in a corporate team exercise comes in the customized scripting we provide. We research the group and include the inside scoop about the group's products, agendas, milestones and buzzwords, etc.

The sample script below is from a game written for a group that writes tech manuals. The entire format of their game manual was formatted as close to one of their product manuals as possible. In this case the additional clues were in the form of balloons to tie in to a software feature (balloon help).

The team color giveaway for this group was neon shoelaces which can be imprinted with any message. The actual map used by each team is 11 x 17 so it is easier to read than the sample provided below.

Additionally, we offer a western variation written around the town of San Juan Bautista. This is an all day program which included the hunt, lunch and a western style casino party in the afternoon. This town lends itself well to the game with its historical background and the merchants were excited to be involved.

In another variation, the game is written around a spy theme entitled TASK: IMPOSSIBLE. The team colors are sports safes which hold the initial clue. They are coded messages which have to be deciphered using an extremely low-tech device. A couple of the stops are required to find one of our character actors on the street by the description given and striking up a conversion with them.

A Pirate Treasure Hunt variation is available using Angel Island. This requires transportation (both land and sea), actors and a full day outing. Naturally, this makes the Angel Island ideal for a special event at a destination and is a perfect variation for large or small groups.

In a public downtown location the key is to have the cooperation of as many local merchants, Chamber of Commerce, etc... as possible and to embed your group directly into the area.

SAMPLE PUZZLE

Example:
"S-A-M-S on the phone, he went across from the park and east to higher learning. The smallest room is what you seek"

The solution to the puzzle tells you both the thing you're looking for and the place in which to find it. If you solve all of these brain teasers correctly, you will return with The Right Stuff.

Sending a spy to check on an opposing team Is allowed since we can't think of a way to stop you. 'two things to consider before opting for this nefarious tactic:

  • Which clue are they working on? Remember; each book is in a different order.
  • Have they got a clue? Consider the source.

About The Icons

Shopping Cart Icon

Camera Icon

Pencil Icon

Two icons together

Cassette Icon

Help

When you see an icon in the margin of a clue, some additional action is required or further information is available.

The answer to some of the puzzles is an item. When you see the shopping cart icon in the margin, you must find the item in the specific place and bring it back

Some answers involve places or things. To prove you arrived at the correct location. the camera icon -indicates that a picture of the team standing by the answer is required. Cameras are available here in the park

If a word or phrase is the correct answer, the pencil icon is shown This indicates that a written answer is required. Correct spelling is mandatory. The pencil icon will also appear as an option with the camera icon so that if a camera is not currently available, a drawing will suffice. Hope there's someone from the Art Dept. on your team.

Just to confuse things a little more, you might see two icons in the margin side by side. This indicates a user option you can either bring the item itself back or opt to make an image of it to turn in. While this may seem democratic, its real function is to make it more difficult to decide what the item in question might be.

Help Icons

Additional clues are available if you need them. Remember, however, that time is critical and that each additional clue you request will eat up more time. Some of the additional clues are audio (songs, etc.) indicated by the cassette icon. The question mark icon means that further clues are obtained through the "help" function.

The Help icon appears next to every game. To access audio help or ask questions, the team must come to Human Interface located in the park. There is no limit to the number of help requests allowed per team but each one takes time and the number of help requests will decide the winner in case of a tie.

Balloon Help

Naturally, The Right Stuff utilizes Balloon Help. To access this new feature merely select the balloon matching the color for the current game and then pop it to get the clue.

Balloon Help versus Human Interface

Your current location. destination. and query will impact whether you use Human Interface (in the park or on-line Balloon Help. In case of a tie at the end of the game. the team with the fewest uses of Human Interface and Balloon Help will be the winner.

Putting It All Together

Let's go back to our sample puzzle, show the proper icons and solve it.

Green

Example:
"SAMS on the phone, he went across from the park and east to higher learning. The smallest room is what you seek"

Answer:
Go to 7267 University Ave. and find a mushroom.

How did we arrive at that? Easy - we wrote lt. But here's how you would have figured it out:

SAMS on the phone - On the phone dial. S-A-M-S translates to 7267. The use of all caps should tell you something's special about that word.

Across from the park and east to higher learning - If you check the area east of the park on your map. you'll see University Ave. A University is a place of higher learning. Your destination is 7267 University Ave.

The smallest room is what you seek - At 7267 University is a grocery store. The smallest room. especially in a grocery store. is going to be a mushroom.

The shopping cart icon indicates that there is an item which must be brought back. The camera icon next to it means that a picture will suffice (in case the express lane is too crowded). If you were stumped, the cassette icon tells us that there is audio help available. The audio clue would have been a passage from the song White Rabbit referring to mushrooms. A further que~y at Human Interface would have prompted you on whatever part had you stumped.

Under the Balloon Help icon is the color of the balloon containing the clue for the current game.

See how easy it is! Once you fall into the twisted logic of the whole thing, you've got it made.

Troubleshooting

The following is a list of the problems most commonly experienced while running The Right Stuff: Before you ask any stupid questions. read this list and try to fix the problem yourself; it's what we'll make you do anyway.

I wore loafers. how do I put shoelaces on them? Refer to page 2 regarding installation.

There's no grocery store at 7267 University Ave. Lighten up - it was just an example.

What if my Balloon Help is deflated? You may either reinflate or cut open your balloon to access the clue inside. Deflated balloons which have not been opened will not count against the team.

Where are the restrooms? There are public restrooms located behind Steamers Restaurant in Old Town. Consult your trusty map.

* ... the answer to this puzzle was, of course, Deli Zioso which can be seen from Opera House Furniture. The deli was in on the game so that when teams entered asking "what's a cucidatti?" the staff was able to provide them with the proper pastry to bring back to your host for the next clue.
